As a rapper, Nicki Minaj has many voices and characters she uses to tell her stories. There’s “Roman Zolanski;” Nicki’s twin sister that emerges when she’s angry; “Martha Zolanski;” Roman’s British mother; and her Spanish alter ego Rosa, just to name a few. However, her many characters do not include an Iowa singer-songwriter named Jason. But after Jason Reeves’ inspired video take on Nicki’s Drake-featuring hit “Moment for Life,” maybe she should consider emulating him on her next album.

“Moment for Life” is one of Nicki’s softer songs from her recent album Pink Friday, as she chronicles her rise and her resistance to have anyone make her feel bad about it. Reeves takes this idea and makes it his own by inflecting his own singer-songwriter vibe and keeping the cover simple, with just him singing with an acoustic guitar, and a friend on drum. While he doesn’t rap the Drake part, he uses Drake’s last verse line “Everybody dies but not everybody lives” to make an inspirational bridge. Check it out below, via Billboard.
