Like ranch dressing, Alicia Keys goes good with anything. Her capabilities are as wide and diverse as her influences, and even if she chooses to show off only a certain set of skills on her original recordings, her cover songs reveal her epic range of styles.
Nowhere is her adaptability more present than in her recent cover of the Beatles‘ “Blackbird” for AOL’s live sessions. The song’s beauty lies in its quiet strength. It’s a gentle song that needs only a little instrumentation and soft lyrics to go a long way. Luckily when Keys’ is left with just a piano, that is exactly what she produces. Her version proves both hollow and evocative, played to perfection, even if the candle scene on stage looks like a screenshot from This Is Spinal Tap.
