Nick Drake’s Pink Moon is one of those songs that leaves you breathless from the first listen. Maybe that’s why many artists stay clear of the unbelievably beautiful song. However, fledgling Washington D.C. artist AIVA made the right choice in covering the song, creating a low key, yet completely otherworldly version of the song that is so good it even rivals my other favorite Nick Drake cover (My Morning Jacket’s cover of “Northern Sky”).

“Pink Moon” is a song that lets you escape from your life whenever you hear it. The understated piano, Drake’s unique voice, and the quiet guitar make the message that much more meaningful. AIVA’s version of the song keeps the original feeling you get when you hear the song (and the young artist even channels Drake’s haunting vocals), but adds synths, creating a version that makes you feel like you’re escaping not only your life, but this planet. The spacey quality of the song works well with the lyrics. Stream and download AIVA’s “Pink Moon” below.
