Sharon Van Etten knows how to harvest the power of a cover. When we posted her version of the Smiths’ “Last Night I Dreamt Someone Loved Me” back in October, we barely knew her name. Since then she’s reappeared, here and elsewhere, with covers of Glass Ghost and E.C. Ball. Her songwriting has gotten several spotlights, too, with covers by Yellow Ostrich and Sweet Lights.

Her latest comes from the latest A.V. Undercover. She takes on Fine Young Cannibals’ guilty pleasure hit “She Drives Me Crazy.” “I grew up with it and I thought there were more possibilities for harmonies to sing with [tourmates] Little Scream,” she said in response to why she chose the song.

After last week’s garage-by-numbers cover of the White Stripes’ “Fell in Love with a Girl,” this molasses-churn ‘80s cover proves refreshingly inventive. Warbly guitar swirls around slow verses and muddy choruses. Every ounce of the original sheen is long gone. Watch it below, via A.V. Undercover.
