Of Montreal has a long history of wacky covers, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from them. Thankfully, the wild Georgia collective are back with a new one for Record Store Day. Specifically, they take on the recently-reunited Buffalo Springfield with “Expecting to Fly” for a Record Store Day 7”.

Despite their reputation for outlandish carnival-esque live performances, the band plays it relatively straight here. Of Montreal frontman has expressed his Neil Young love before, covering “Harvest Moon” back in January 2010 for Haiti relief (listen here). You’ll have to wait until April 16th to get “Expecting to Fly” on wax, but Pitchfork has a stream for you now.

Check out “Expecting to Fly” at Pitchfork. Look for our full Record Store Day covers preview next week.

  1. Well, I went and listened to Of Montreal’s version of Expecting To Fly. I wasn’t expecting much, given the near perfection of the original. Why would anyone even attempt approaching it? I wasn’t disappointed. It’s not very good. Go find the original and bask in its beauty. Nice idea, poor execution. I hope no one pays for this.
