And the winner for Most Anticipated Tribute Album of 2011 goes to…

Rave On Buddy Holly, coming June 28th to celebrate what would be Buddy Holly’s 75th birthday this fall. This tracklist defines the term “stacked.” From veterans like Paul McCartney and Patti Smith to newer breakouts like She & Him and Cee-Lo Green, every one of the 19 tracks looks to be another potential stunner. My Morning Jacket crooning “True Love Ways”? The Black Keys rocking “Dearest”? John Doe doing who-knows-what to “Peggy Sue Got Married”?

Rave On Buddy Holly steers clear of the reverent re-creations typically found on similar projects,” the press release says, and that’s all we need to know. It describes Modest Mouse’s “That’ll Be the Day” as “truly avant-garde” and says Florence and the Machine brings “an industrial New Orleans vibe” to “Not Fade Away.” Excited yet? There’s more.

Yesterday we heard Karen Elson cover Lou Reed’s “Vicious” and speculated that hubby Jack White was on the track too. Well, this time we know Jack White joins her, for “Crying, Waiting, Hoping.” Incidentally, Mr. Reed himself appears on “Peggy Sue” giving the song “overdriven guitars and loopy keyboards.”

No clips have surfaced yet, but as a preview, watch this great video collection of Paul McCartney covering five Holly classics over the years. Full tracklist below.
