Stream: Thurston Moore, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Mass Solo Revolt Cover Guided By Voices

Few artists can claim to be as prolific as Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard. Ignore the GBV catalogue and look at his solo output over the last five years alone – 12 full-length albums people! He built his status as a lo-fi icon with that seminal band, however, and must find living that legacy down as difficult as the solo Beatles did.

Now three songs have popped up to remind us of GBV’s achievements, all from upcoming tribute album Sing For Your Meat (due April 16th). Thurston Moore, of the equally legendary Sonic Youth, takes on “Stabbing a Star” (via SPIN). He preserves the raucous arrangement of the original, although with considerably improved fidelity – you can actually understand the lyrics! Cymbals Eat Guitars remind us that Pollard was not the only songwriter in the band, covering Tobin Sprout’s “Gleemer (The Deeds of Fertile Jim).” They slow the track down initially, then slowly pick up the pace and add instruments, building to an energetic, Wall-of-Sound conclusion.
