Jesse Malin may be relatively unknown outside of the Tri-State area, but dude has some famous friends. Bruce Springsteen guested on his 2007 album Glitter in the Gutter and this past weekend another longtime friend joined him for concert at New York’s City Winery: Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.

Following Malin’s complete performance of 2002 fan favorite The Fine Art of Self Destruction, Armstrong and the Replacements’ Tommy Stinson (who opened the show) joined Malin and his band St. Mark’s Social for four encore covers: Bad Brains’ “Pay to Cum,” John Lennon’s “Instant Karma,” the Rolling Stones’ “Winter,” and Johnny Thunders’ “You Can’t Put Your Arm Around a Memory.” All three are Malin tour staples, but he ceded lead vocals to Armstrong and Stinson on “Memory.” It’s all as ramshackle as you might expect, but Malin’s “Instant Karma” freakout is a joy to behold. Watch surprisingly well-filmed videos below.
