Here’s something different to start your day. Naples musician Carlo Castellano posts regular YouTube “videosongs” in the style of Pomplamoose or Mike Tompkins. Unlike them, though, he can’t sing, so he needs other approaches. In his latest, he finds a winning new instrument: ping-pong balls.
To be fair, he doesn’t just use ping-pong balls to play Philip Glass’s instrumental “Truman Sleeps” (from the Truman Show soundtrack). But every sound you hear incorporates them somehow. There’s ping-pong balls on xylophone, ping-pong balls on drums, ping-pong balls on harpsichord. It’s novel without coming off as a gimmick (though, ironically, he tells us he hates ping-pong).
