When we named Nada Surf’s If I Had a Hi-Fi one of the best cover albums of 2010, we noted that “Enjoy the Silence” offered one of the few nods to well-known material. Perhaps the band agrees, because after pushing single Bill Fox’s “Electrocution” last year, they’ve released the Depeche Mode cover as their latest video. Get ready to emote!

“That was the first time I’d really changed a song to that degree, and that was really liberating,” singer Matthew Caws said. “We usually learn a cover really fast, in broad strokes, and this is the first moment where we took the time to get into it and make these songs more our own.”

In a relatively straightforward clip, the video shows the band performing the song live on last year’s European tour (though the audio is the studio recording). That’s about it. Well-filmed footage can provide enjoyable visual accompaniment, though, and with an actual director at the helm (Jan-Ole Gerster) this provides a surprisingly engaging ride.
