“Hey Ya!” was one of the defining songs of the 2000s. No matter how sick of it one got, making it through the entire four minutes without smiling proved an impossible feat. Since that mega-mega-hit André 3000 has rested on his musical laurels, releasing only a soundtrack to a subpar movie. He’s back though, bestowing upon the world a sixty-second Beatles cover that advertises the NBA. Totally worth the wait!
André performs the Beatles’ obscure-for-a-reason “All Together Now,” giving it a soul-pop shine that feels about as natural as playing “Hey Ya!” like “Helter Skelter.” The fun feels forced. Plus, is “All Together Now” really the right choice for an ad all about one hotshot player (Kobe Bryant)?
The Muppets channeled the group-hug mentality far better on their 1995 album Kermit Unpigged. So after you watch the embarrassing Kobe Bryant dunkfest below, cheer yourself up with a plush critter sing-along.
