This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.

With Valentine’s Day this week, Bandcamp got hit with a wave of lovers’ covers. The holiday may be over, but, as we saw yesterday, romantic covers remain in vogue. So we offer some today. Well, three are romantic. The other two are decidedly not. One honors the revolution in Egypt and the other is about…milkshakes. And nothing else.

“Fire in Cairo” offers an obvious topical slant. The song, originally on the Cure’s 1979 debut, brings bedroom harmonies to a surprisingly full production. The under-pressure violin merging into recordings of protesters at Tahrir Square builds a moving finale.

Katy Perry just dropped her fourth Teenage Dream single yesterday. Until we get a good cover of that though, we’ll stick with single #3: Firework. Matt James starts a YouTube-esque solo piano performance (though with much better sound quality) before incorporating super-synthesized strings.

Five-song EP Itchy Covers popped up on Bandcamp this week and every track delivers. This one takes 1940s standard “Bésame Mucho” and gives it a hazy Drifters-meet-My-Bloody-Valentine kick. Download the full thing here.

Cheyenne Marie Mize first recorded this cover back in 2006, but put it up on Bandcamp as a Valentine’s Day freebie. Harpsichord and “Lion Sleeps Tonight” backing vocals make this one to remember.

We thought we were done with covers of this one back in 200X. Glad we were wrong. This chirpy acoustic features a double-tracked vocal that shifts to a surprise harmony for two words: my milkshake.
