“Grinnin’ in Your Face,” by Delta blues pioneer Son House is a sparse affair: House claps while he sings about the value of true friendship, and that pretty much sums it up. Powerful, catchy, and simple. The cover by L.A.-via-Oregon singer, ZZ Ward, keeps that simplicity while modernizing this classic.
It’s hard to debate that Frank Ocean was the breakout artist of 2012, and, though there haven’t been a shortage of them, there haven’t been quite as many covers as one might expect of the stellar “Thinkin Bout You.” Luckily, AV Undercover has provided with a beautiful new one by ZZ Ward. Ward and her band bring a coffeeshop feel that fits the song perfectly, despite the downbeat, synthy electronica of the original, and her vocals are a fantastic match for Ocean’s undeniably unique cadences. Enjoy.
