Probably every song the Beatles have ever written is someone’s favorite song. “If I Fell,” off A Hard Day’s Night, is not one of the band’s most famous songs (although when talking about the Beatles that’s certainly a relative term), but rest assured that someone out there would be upset if anyone put out a cover of this song that sounds radically different. That person will not like singer-songwriter Greta Link’s new cover, but everyone else will. Continue reading »

It’s been a long year since we were first introduced to Virginia’s Gold Top County Ramblers with their epic Guns n’ Roses medley. The wait, however, has ended. Continue reading »

Living in the S.F. Bay Area, I have had the pleasure of being in the know when it comes to Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers. The soulful, rocking Bluhm is a regular live performer who turns up at the big festivals, as a guest vocalist and headlining her own gigs. A week ago a friend of mine, who is friends with Nicki, posted her most recent “Van Session” song to his Facebook, a cover of Hall and Oates‘ “I Can’t Go For That”. Continue reading »

Last year, Cover Me celebrated March Madness with Moptop Madness. In lieu of basketball teams, we assembled sixty-four covers of Beatles’ songs to compete for the number one slot. And it’s really a shame that Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s cover of “Ticket to Ride,” wasn’t released last year because it would have proven to be a worthy competitor. Continue reading »

Back in early January when we first posted Walk Off The Earth‘s unique cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” the video had around 30K views. Now, less than six weeks later it has over sixty million! If you have one of the fastest growing viral videos ever on YouTube, what do you do next? The answer is easy: you figure out what made the viral craze great and you capitalize on it. Walk Off The Earth have nailed it on their follow up, as they have released official ‘Beard Guy’ t-shirts and turned him into ‘Epic Beard Guy’ with the addition of a smoking pipe in the latest vid. More often than not, cover versions of The Beatles songs stay pretty true to the original. Respect and reverence for the time-tested originals leads artists to stick pretty close to the template. So when a new artist appears on the scene with a refreshing, updated take on a Fab Four classic, we take notice. As we noted last month, 2012 is shaping up to be a banner year of Beatles covers. Mashups are usually the realm of DJ’s, not singer/songwriters who favor acoustic guitars. Texas-based musician Aaron Kaufman is breaking the mold, however, with some creative mashups that pair a classic track with a modern hit. A few months ago he combined Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” with Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl,” and his most recent mashup pairs his takes on Gotye’s much-covered single “Somebody That I Used to Know” and The Beatles classic “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Continue reading »

Coming off her well received 2011 album Follow Me Down, Sarah Jarosz is squeezing in a mini-tour before returning  to Boston to complete the 2nd half of her junior year at New England Conservatory. During her stop at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck in Houston, TX, the new face of Americana picked and strummed a handful of fantastic covers throughout her set. Continue reading »
