Last we heard about The Green Album, We Are Scientists were covering the whole Weezer album in Brooklyn. Now there’s a new “Green Album” on the scene though, a Muppets tribute that promises to be something special indeed. Our first glimpse at it comes from My Morning Jacket, performing “Our World,” a song from the 1977 Christmas special Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. You can listen to it over at SPIN. Rave On Buddy Holly, arguably the most hyped cover album of the year, finally drops this week. Rampant previews hinted that the album would be something special, and the A-list lineup of artists doesn’t disappoint. Rave On is a solid, carefully curated collection of tracks from Buddy Holly‘s surprisingly extensive catalog, a worthy tribute to the rock pioneer.

Choosing standouts from such a varied and high-profile set of covers is a challenge. Some of the best moments come from contributors who chose to keep their covers low-key. Dan Auerbach’s vocals gracefully carry the Black Keys‘ quiet, percussion-based opener “Dearest,” while Fiona Apple and Jon Brion trip through a pitch-perfect duet in “Everyday.” My Morning Jacket offers the elegantly subdued “True Love Ways,” embellished with a lovely string section. They Say It’s Your Birthday celebrates an artist’s special day with other people singing his or her songs. Let others do the work for a while. Happy birthday!

It’s time to make it rain and get our purple on, for today Prince turns 53. After spending a few years preoccupied with the creation of some albums that only he could enjoy, the father of funk recently renewed his interest in all us less funky, esoteric people by going on a cross-continental tour. Once again he is accessible to all those who adore him…so long as they adore him on his own terms. Meaning no YouTube fan videos, no file sharing, no blog posts, and for God’s sakes no cover songs! Rave On Buddy Holly drops at the end of the month, but we already have our seventh track to listen to. It’s My Morning Jacket covering “True Love Ways,” and you can check it out below (via SPIN). Jim James brings his most country croon to this simple acoustic ballad as lush strings swirl around him. Continue reading »

This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.

Today’s set features covers of a couple hairy-dude bands, a couple beautiful blonde singers, and Bloc Party, who are in some other category (pretty-scruffy/hipster-alternative maybe). Download ‘em all below. Continue reading »

And the winner for Most Anticipated Tribute Album of 2011 goes to…

Rave On Buddy Holly, coming June 28th to celebrate what would be Buddy Holly’s 75th birthday this fall. This tracklist defines the term “stacked.” From veterans like Paul McCartney and Patti Smith to newer breakouts like She & Him and Cee-Lo Green, every one of the 19 tracks looks to be another potential stunner. My Morning Jacket crooning “True Love Ways”? The Black Keys rocking “Dearest”? John Doe doing who-knows-what to “Peggy Sue Got Married”? Continue reading »

What a difference tempo and volume can make! My Morning Jacket’s “Anytime,” from their critically acclaimed album, Z, is an ultra-caffeinated, bouncy tune that seems to be about not much of anything.  When fellow southerners Manchester Orchestra get a hold of it, though, the aura of the song changes. Although Andy Hull’s voice is extremely reminiscent of MMJ’s Jim James, he softly coos, rather than shouts, the words. The distorted guitar becomes a strummed acoustic, and the pace is slowed to lullaby speed. Continue reading »

Well, this is it, people. The end of the line. After four amazing New York City shows performing – deep breath – The Tennessee Fire, At Dawn, It Still Moves, and Z, the band reached their final album: Evil Urges. As always, they began the show by performing the thing in full. As the final omnichord notes of “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt.2” echoed through the hall, the boys left the stage, only to return for an epic cover-frenzy encore almost as long as the main set.

The band began the post-album festivities with a cluster of new originals and old favorites. They then closed things out with four covers: “Oh! Sweet Nuthin” (the second Velvet Underground cover of the stand), “Hot Fun In The Summertime” (Sly & the Family Stone), “Carnival Time” (Al Johnson), and “Move On Up” (Curtis Mayfield) with a full horn section! Check out videos/MP3s of all four below. Continue reading »
