As you may remember from her recent Peter Gabriel cover, Karin Dreijer Andersson aka. Fever Ray embraces darkness with glitchy goth-techno productions. The former singer of the Knife, Andersson delves deep into the psyche to discover some creepy truths. It’s music to soundtrack a 2 a.m. bout of paranoia. Or create one.

Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit are, suffice to say, less gloomy. Fever Ray seems a strange choice for them until you realize they record for the Rabid Records label. And who runs that label? Andersson herself. Connections everywhere! This woodsy cover comes as the b-side to the band’s new “Ghost Town” single, which drops next Tuesday. Continue reading »

That weird image, which showed up in our inbox on Monday, indicated that Fever Ray would release their version of Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street” on Tuesday. They didn’t. It’s here now though and it’s as spooky as anything they’ve done. Way creepier than that Elbow version we heard in June.

We last heard from Karin Elisabeth Dreijer Andersson with her bizarre mammoth-witch-laser-cult video for Nick Cave’s “Stranger Than Darkness.” Hopefully that image indicates a similar video is forthcoming. I mean, would you really go through all that blackface monkey makeup just for a promo shot? Well, if you’re Fever Ray I suppose you might. Either way, listen to the electro-scare track and download a higher-quality MP3 below. (via NME)

Fingers crossed Mr. Gabriel returns the favor, as he is wont to do. Until then, check out covers of every song from his classic So. Continue reading »

Song of the Day posts one cool cover every morning. Catch up on past installments here.

Often performed as tossed-off bonus tracks or live radio extras, cover songs rarely get good videos. There are exceptions. We saw one a couple weeks ago with that weird pig-surgeon “99 Problems.” Here’s another.

That a Nick Cave cover would inspire one of the creepiest videos of 2009 is not super surprising. In Fever Ray’s “Stranger Than Kindness,” a dark house plays host to some spooky rituals with hooded priests, a bison-woman, a blackface vampire child, and more. As with all Fever Ray songs, the music is equally dark, brooding beats accompanied by neon lasers. A disturbing way to start your day! Continue reading »

The first post of the month features covers of every track on a famous album. Got an idea for a future pick? Leave a note in the comments!

Peter Gabriel has never gotten much love from the indie world, but thanks to a new covers album he’s finally getting the Pitchfork articles he deserves. Scratch My Back presents a clever concept: he covers the likes of Radiohead and Arcade Fire with the understanding that they’ll return the favor. So far Bon Iver, the Magnetic Fields and Paul Simon have obliged. While we wait for more to surface, here’s a look at Gabriel’s finest hour: So.

Queensrÿche – Red Rain

This apocalyptic torrent holds up surprisingly well given a louder treatment. The best cover of this is by R.E.M. and Natalie Merchant, but Gabriel guests there so it doesn’t really count. [Buy]

Maiysha – Sledgehammer

At the Roots weekly late-night NYC jam session over the summer, Maiysha performed this one with the band. Sadly there’s no recording of that barn-stormer, but her album recording keeps the sultry teases. [Buy]

Willie Nelson & Sinead O’Connor – Don’t Give Up

Covers of this one (of which there are many) tend to be sickeningly emotional. Willie’s sing-speak gives the proceedings a more honest touch, and Sinead’s broken warble completes the picture. [Buy]

Michael Aaron – That Voice Again

Apparently the “voice” is meant to represent judgment. I prefer to think of it as paranoia. [Buy]

Tim Reynolds – In Your Eyes

This song also tends towards the über-emotional cover. While those tend to work better here, you can’t replicate Youssou N’Dour. Dave Matthews Band guitar virtuoso Reynolds tears it up with a funky acoustic instrumental. [Buy]

Fever Ray – Mercy Street

Fever Ray, the current project of The Knife singer Karin Dreijer Andersson, performed this one live a few times near the end of last year. It’s a paranoid electro-goth rush, like just about everything else she does (including her fantastic Nick Cave cover). [Buy]

Ari Hest – Big Time

Singer-songwriter Hest clearly loves this album, regularly performing covers of this, “In Your Eyes,” and “Mercy Street.” Check those out at archive.org. [Buy]

Justin Cottrell – We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37)

Anyone who’s ever taken a psych class knows Milgram’s experiments. In a nutshell, Yale scientist Stanley Milgram had volunteers quiz a “student,” giving the student a shock of ever-increasing power when he got an answer wrong. The goal was to see how long people would continue to give the shocks as the student (in reality a partner of the experimenter) screamed in pain. Some volunteers reached a point where they refused to administer another shock. Most didn’t. In one variation 37 out of 40 subjects never stopped. Chilling stuff. Read more. [Buy]

Laurie Anderson – This Is the Picture (Excellent Birds)

Anderson co-wrote this with Gabriel and actually released her version first. Gabriel didn’t release his version on the first pressing of So, perhaps content to have appeared on Anderson’s recording. [Buy]

This Week’s News

As many of you know, Cover Me recently launched its very own Twitter page! To gather followers, here’s an incentive. If Cover Me gets 100 followers by Monday night, I will tweet an exclusive set of Animal Collective covers (to followers only). So get on board!

In other exciting site news, our beautiful new site logo goes up on Monday! Here are some key words to whet your appetite: Radiohead. The Beatles. Nine Inch Nails.

Highly Rec’d’s monthly mixtape is cover-themed. Go to their box.net to download covers of Weezer, Michael Jackson, Guided By Voices and 19 more!

Another covers mix is this DJ mashup with 32 tracks!

Wednesday was the Day of the Beatles, with their amazing-sounding remasters and Rock Band video game coming out. Beatles cover action has, needless to say, a bit stronger than usual. For you Brits, MOJO magazine‘s newest issue comes with a CD of Abbey Road covers. They’re excellent. Not as good are these Ten Beatles Covers That Are Worse Than Yours. Oh, Mrs. Miller…

Roseanne Cash has a new covers disc coming out with a cool backstory. When she was young her dad (some guy named John) gave her 100 songs he said she needed to learn to play. Well she did, and some of them are coming out on her new album The List. She’s premiering some via web stream on the 23rd.

Blogger Marc Cohen is setting up a website of 33-cent cover tunes. It doesn’t debut ’til November, but he’s asking for submissions now.

I mentioned last week that Beck’s latest is covers of the entire Songs of Leonard Cohen album. As that project unfolds, catch up on his last by downloading the full set of Velvet Underground & Nico takes.

Let the live cover rumpus begin! The Killers covered Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” with Wolfmother a few days ago, perhaps right as Britney Spears was covering “Ironic.” Even the latter was reportedly better than Katy Perry covering Queen at Bumbershoot.

Speaking of concerts, Nine Inch Nails performed live for the final time last night, busting out a couple Joy Division covers.

Emo-punks Paramore have been going cover-crazy in support of their latest release, first tackling Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” before moving on to buzz band Phoenix’s “Long Distance Call.”

A less annoying brand of glam-rock comes your way via Anberlin, who recently took on New Order’s “True Faith.” Pick it up for a buck here.

Muse has covered West Side Story‘s “America” as a VMA promo. They based their version on this 1968 gem by The Nice.

Not many people have noticed though — the TV world is too busy drooling over Glee. It’s a covers-friendly comedy and the cast talked to Rolling Stone about their favorite re-versions.

I’m a little sad “I Gotta Feeling” didn’t win our Cover Commissions poll, but this guy does a nice acoustic version. Well, nice until he’s tackled.

Where my Vashti Bunyan fans?? Hello? Anyone? Well apparently she’s the “Godmother of freak-folk” (I thought she was Paul Bunyan’s kid sister or something) and Fever Ray pay tribute.

This Week’s Submissions

Jer Coons – I Want You Back (Jackson 5)

David Gray – Friday I’m in Love (The Cure)

Orba Square – All Apologies (Nirvana)
