Back in June we heard them do Brenda Lee’s “Is It True” and they’ve just dropped another, a cover of “Tears in the Typing Pool.” Where Broadcast’s original was lo-fi and choppy, Tennis bring a lush sheen to this beautiful wash. • For years being in an Apple ad was the pinnacle of sell-out success. But what about all those other smart phones? Surely they deserve their own indie-breakout soundtracks. Well, Rachel Goodrich’s Micachu and the Shapes cover was featured in a Blackberry ad last month! The song? “Golden Phone.” Here’s hoping that pays the bills.

The world of somewhat under-the-radar pioneers has suffered devastating losses this past month. First the legendary Captain Beefheart passed in December. A few weeks later, Gerry Rafferty of “Baker Street” and “Stuck in the Middle with You” fame left us. Finally, just four days ago Trish Keenan, lead singer of indie electro-poppers Broadcast, died of pneumonia. Oof. Continue reading »
