Fleetwood Mac is not easy to pigeonhole. Part of this is due to their talent and timelessness; more significantly, the band’s leader and line-up has changed 3 times over, taking the band from its incarnation with Peter Green at the helm as one of the fiercest English-blues bands on the scene, to a more adolescent stage with Bob Welch steering and producing hippie-of-the-times songs, to its final incarnation in which the ferocious duo of Buckingham and Nicks turned Fleetwod Mac into what it has now been hallmarked as. Point is, the band is more than Nicks and Buckingham, and the hope is that any Fleetwood Mac tribute album would duly recognize the band’s colorful history with remarkable covers that are juxtaposed in a way that reflect the unique unfurling of the band’s growth and self-discovery. A little over a month ago, we got a sneak peak at the new “Just Tell Me That You Want Me,” an all-star compilation paying tribute to the iconic Fleetwood Mac. We heard renditions of classics such as “Future Games” reinterpreted by MGMT and “Silver Springs” by Lykke Li. The album was officially released in Starbucks across the country on the 14th. If you haven’t had the chance to stop by one of the dozens of Starbucks within the five mile radius of your house (or if you’re not a resident of the U.S.), you’ve lucked out, as the entire album is now available for streaming. You know the soft rock/world music CDs you see at the check-out point of your local Starbucks? Turns out that these CDs aren’t entirely worth passing up. Starbucks’ label Hear Music/Concord has gathered some of the best and brightest musical talents for the Fleetwood Mac tribute compilation, Just Tell Me That You Want Me, and with producers Randall Poster and Gelya Robb, who were behind the grammy-nominated Rave On Buddy Holly, you know it’s going to be worth adding on to your $4.85 tall skinny vanilla latte. Best Coast’s sophomore album, The Only Place, is due for release on May 15th. Bethany Costentino talked with the L.A. Times in February, where she mentioned that she has been reading the Fleetwood Mac book, “Tusk” for inspiration. We will have to wait a couple more weeks to see how the influence plays off, but in the meantime Best Coast have released a cover of “Storms” from Fleetwood Mac’s 1979 album Tusk. Continue reading »
No secret that we love Telephoned. The covers duo of Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas consistently bring one of the freshest approaches to covers out there. We named last year’s Off the Hook mixtape the third-best covers album of 2010 and now they’ve released another: Good Call. It finds the duo branching out even further to redefine the “cover” concept. On Monday night California indie-pop band Best Coast brought their energetic live show to Coalition in Brighton, England and treated the crowd to a raucous version of Blink-182’s pop-punk hit “Dammit.” Opening-act Spectrals joined Bethany Cosentino and co. for the fun, igniting a mini-riot of stage dancers and crowd surfers. After the show Cosentino tweeted about the spontaneous cover “yes we butchered it, but it was SO fun.” Continue reading »
Playing their brand of sunny garage-pop, Best Coast burst onto the indie scene with last year’s Crazy For You, thanks to significant pre-release buzz in the blogosphere. The buzz came courtesy of the excitement generated by the release of a couple of EPs and singles in 2009 - especially Make You Mine, which featured a cover of The Beach Boys’ “In My Room.” Now the folks over at Daytrotter have sifted through their archive and brought us a late 2009 session with Best Coast featuring said cover.
