Now in its fifth series, A.V. Undercover from the A.V. Club has churned out some memorable performances over the years. Although the break was a little longer than usual this time, this next batch of songs should add plenty more to a growing list of interesting combinations. There’s some low-hanging fruit out there, with oft-covered greats like TV on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” and Mountain Goats’ “The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton”, but there are going to be some tricky ones too, like Arrested Development’s seminal “Tennessee,” and the Go-Go’s dated “We Got the Beat”. Paul Hammer and Deidre Muro made sure that the 90s are alive and well in Chicago when they stopped in the AV Club. The duo, collectively known as the Brooklyn-based pop-rock act Savoir Adore, shared their late 90s nostalgia with an endearing cover of one hit wonder New Radicals “You Get What You Give.” Continue reading »

In the latest episode of AV Club’s Undercover series, Mac DeMarco and his crew bring their brand of weirdo rock to the studios to perform a cover of Weezer’s classic Blue Album track. A.V. Undercover from the A.V. Club has a very simple equation: 25 songs+25 artists= 25 unique covers. As each band enters the studio they choose from the remaining songs, covering them faithfully, or more often, creatively. The results speak for themselves over the years, from GWAR being stuck with Kansas‘ “Carry on My Wayward Son,” to Iron & Wine‘s version of George Michael‘s “One More Try,” to They Might Be Giants including the staff of the A.V. Club to join in on Chumbawamba‘s “Tubthumping.” Continue reading »

The AV Club in Chicago admits to catching flack every now and then for only featuring “small indie bands.”  These small indie bands usually have a fun time in the AV Sessions (we just saw Calexico do Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone“) but no one will ever be able to top alt-metal monsters GWAR and their take on Kansas’ “Carry On My Wayward Son.” Continue reading »

Unless you’re Sterling Archer or Top Gun’s greatest fan, chances are you don’t opt to sing or listen to Kenny Loggins‘ “Danger Zone” all that often. The song has been sitting on the A.V. Club’s Undercover List for quite some time, and Alt. Country band Calexico decided to tackle it. Continue reading »
