Let’s be clear: Bruce Springsteen is untouchable. But if there is anyone who can attempt his impassioned growl, Glen Hansard could be a good contender.
Hansard’s cover of Springsteen’s “Drive All Night” is one of those covers that follows the original faithfully, but injects little bits and pieces that make it a truly Glen Hansard-style track. Glen’s vocals are always full of passion and force, and despite the slower tempo of this song he doesn’t depart from his trademark singing style, keeping the grittiness of the song intact.
With a Van Morrison vibe, Glen’s cover brings forth an Irish folk sound, giving the cover a different angle of melancholy than the original. And just when it starts to wind down, Eddie Vedder’s voice chimes in deeply, crooning softly “Don’t cry now…”
