Fall Out Boy covering Tom Waits sounds like the stuff nightmares are made of. An entry for the next Punk Goes Creaky-Beat-Blues-Holler perhaps. At a recent live performance at Rolling Stone headquarters, though, FOB lead singer Patrick Stump paid homage to Waits with a left-field choice and a truly impressive delivery.

No “Downtown Train” schmaltz here. Instead, Stump chose Waits’ spoken-word huckster-jazz “Step Right Up” (a song previously covered by the Violent Femmes). He claims he can’t remember the words, but does just fine. Given that the lyrics a) don’t rhyme and b) aren’t in any particular order, that’s pretty darn impressive. A friend joins in on fretless bass, adding an extra dose of jazz cred to Stump’s snapping.
