Courteney Palis

Courteney is currently a journalism and environmental studies student at NYU. When she's not busy worrying about how she'll feed herself once she graduates in December, she's reading, writing, blowing lots of money on shows, and playing piano or guitar (not both simultaneously -- she's not that talented). Her iPod is probably the most unlikely mix of music you've ever seen -- and it's only part of the collection she used to have before her hard drive crashed. You can follow her not-so-exciting life on Twitter: @courteneygoy.

Hip hop vet Dr. Dre has been in the music scene since the early ’80s but come the year 2000, it seemed the world needed a little reminding that the famous rapper is certainly a forced to be reckoned with — that’s where the song “Forgot About Dre” came in. Released as the second single off of Dr. Dre’s sophomore album, 2001, “Forgot About Dre” featured rapper Eminem in his early years and won the pair a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group in 2000. May’s a big month for high school and college students across the country, many of whom are graduating and moving on to bigger and better things. And what better way is there to celebrate (or maybe mourn?) than with a cover of the classic ’90s throwback, “Dammit”? Released by punk rock gods, Blink-182, way back in 1997, “Dammit” was the band’s first breakout hit and today remains a kick-ass anthem about one trouble of growing up: breaking up. They Say It’s Your Birthday celebrates an artist’s special day with other people singing his or her songs. Let others do the work for a while. Happy birthday!

At the age of 20, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins became one-third of one of the most successful singing girl groups of all time: TLC. Throughout the ’90s, the R&B trio — T-Boz, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes — consistently dominated the charts with singles like “No Scrubs,” “Unpretty,” and “Waterfalls.” Continue reading »

Best (So Far) finds the finest first-round covers of the latest pop hits.

Launched back in February 2008, the New York-based indie band fun. – comprised of Andrew Dost, Jack Antonoff, and Nate Ruess (formerly of The Format) – has been hovering quietly under the mainstream radar for quite some time. It really wasn’t until “We Are Young” (featuring R&B singer Janelle Monae) was covered on Glee back in December and featured in a Chevrolet Super Bowl commercial this past February that the three-man band began commanding a lot more attention. Sometimes the best way to breathe new life into an oft-covered song is to simplify it. Jay Brannan’s version of Adele’s “Someone Like You,” for example, is delightfully refreshing following a slew of covers and a few months off from the track (it seems the world has moved on to admiring the talented songstress’ latest single, “Set Fire To The Rain“). Pop singer Kelly Clarkson has certainly come quite a ways from her American Idol days — just last October she released her fifth studio album Stronger, featuring a hugely popular single of the same name. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” hit the airwaves this past January as the second single off the album and has since become her third song to top Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In fact, the track held the spot longer than Clarkson’s other chart-topping hits, “A Moment Like This” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Continue reading »

If you know of the Australian new wave rock band Men at Work, then you most likely know of their song “Down Under,” too. Released in 1982 as the second single off of the band’s debut album Business as Usual, “Down Under” won the five Aussies success in the States, reaching number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in early 1983. While the unique original’s laid-back feel and flute flourishes are hard to beat, the UK’s Barricades Rise manage to do the song justice with their updated cover of the track.
