Adele Hazan

Adele first realized her love for cover songs was an infatuation when she discovered 15 covers of Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah" in her music collection (Thanks Napster!). Freshly transplanted in Austin, TX, she finds herself constantly surrounded by music. She got her start writing in elementary school, and just learned 2 years ago that she’s been holding her pen incorrectly all along. Her interests are old t-shirts, tandem bikes, and anything with barbeque sauce. You can find her dancing in the front row at a concert or on twitter (@AdeleLaurie).

This past weekend, thousands of festival-goers flocked to America's live music capital to catch up with an eclectic group of bands for three days at the Austin City Limits festival. The crowd was equal parts hipster and country, uniting to enjoy shows from headliners like M.I.A. and The Eagles. The weather was flawless, the food was delectable, and the covers were ample.

The full-out dance parties of the weekend were on Saturday at Deadmau5 and Muse. Thousands rocking out under the laser lights until we were all kicked out for the night. It was a rare moment in which everyone was committed to staying for every minute of the sets instead of trekking off to catch a good spot for a later show. And while it was impressive to hear The Eagles (and no shortage of Big Lebowski references), their slow jam sing-a-longs ran a bit long.

Below we collect some of the weekend's great covers. Broken Bells If this is not done, the drive will spin but it will never initialise fully and the area will not be accessible. (aka. the Shins guy Danger Mouse) cover the Black Keys. Band of Horses returns Cee-Lo Green's cover love with “Georgia.” Muse plays one famous cover, one newer one. Continue reading »

“Just because it's auto-tuned doesn't mean it's not sincere,” said an unidentified member of Gayngs, a band comprised of members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, Dosh, Solid Gold, and more (via The Village Voice). This Northern super-group took on Sade's “By Your Side” at a recent Daytrotter session as well as at some shows. They added some Auto-Tune and a background choir of voices to cover this slow jam. Now, I know what you're thinking: Hide your kids, hide your wife. However, it really works. Check out a live video and the Daytrotter MP3 below. Continue reading »

While listening to covers of Bob Dylan, it is important to not sit around waiting for his raspy voice to suddenly appear… after all, it is being covered by someone else. Subterranean Homesick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan’s ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ brought together artists like The Morning Benders, J. Tillman of Fleet Foxes, and Laura Veirs to channel the folk from before they were born. They cover the album in its entirety, closing with five covers of outtakes from the original recording sessions.

Staying true to the original, the first half of the album is electric. It felt forced and over-produced for most of the tracks, especially Peter Morén’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” The original novelty of an electric Bob Dylan gets lost in the opening song with too much noise. It did work for Mirah’s “Love Minus Zero/No Limit,” with a peacefully haunting hum. Continue reading »
