moses sumney thank u next

It’s a little strange to hear Moses Sumney reference Ariana Grande’s exes by name in the opening of his cover of “thank u, next,” released on Amazon Music.

Whereas Grande’s original hit is an easy bright pop song, Sumney reforms it into something of his own. His cover becomes more whimsical and tender by incorporating dancing synths interlacing between harmonies.

It starts with rippling layers of autotune over Sumney backing vocals and a minimalistic percussive beat. Gradually and gently, soothing electronic sounds are added, creating a dreamy rendition of the song. Sumney slows down the beat to create a more relaxed undertone, suggesting he’ll thank the exes over a cup of coffee and a friendly chat rather than scrawling their names down in a burn book.
