Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek has recorded full-album tributes to both AC/DC and Modest Mouse, so suffice to say, his choice of cover songs is wide-ranging. But his latest may be the most unpredictable yet: “Come on Get Happy,” the theme from the cornball 1970s sitcom The Partridge Family.

It’s the lead single from upcoming album, his second this year, This Is My Dinner, out November 1. And there’s a second surprise in store for Sun Kil Moon fans: This is a jaunty full-band number, not the somber solo guitar his covers typically entail. You might expect “Come on Get Happy” to be delivered ironically from someone well known for being endlessly maudlin (he has a seven-minute song about a second cousin dying in a trashcan fire), but he actually sounds like he means it. Who knew Kozelek could sound so dang peppy?
