For a Northside Festival showcase over the weekend, the music book series 33 1/3 hosted a series of all-cover shows dedicated to three albums they’re written about. Deradoorian covered Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality, Ava Luna covered Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson, and Frankie Cosmos covered Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville. We have videos from all three below.

The Sabbath and Phair sets were about what you’d expect – heavy as hell in the first case, loose and hooky in the second (“I’m like the anti-Liz Phair right now, I have no confidence,” Frankie Cosmos singer Greta Kline said of her nerves). Ava Luna’s Serge set was the most memorable though, bringing a string trio – with conductor! – plus props and costumes to channel Gainsbourg’s louche cool.
