It’s hard to believe Lizzie Goddard is only 17 from her plaintive cover of Reverend & The Makers debut single ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’. The young singer-songwriter from Gainsborough, England infuses a sadness into the lyrics that in the original sounded angry.
Replacing the urgent indie-electro energy of the Reverend’s version with just her acoustic guitar she gives the song a depth that is maybe overlooked in the original and that definitely comes to the forefront with the sparse solo backing. The song paraphrases a famous Marlon Brando line from ‘On The Waterfront’, on the strength of this cover Lizzie definitely sounds like she’ll be a contender.
