Young Unknowns Brings Ambient Twist to Cars’ “Drive”

Young Unknowns, a four-piece ambient band from Brooklyn, released this cover of The Cars‘ “Drive” in January of 2013 and went relatively, well, unknown. The band just released their second EP, Endless Landscape, and featured the cover on it, and this time, we were sure to check it out.

Singer/guitarist Meredith Meyers captures the ’80s angst perfectly. Instead of using droning synths, the band utilizes negative ambient space, swallowing the listener in it and really allowing them to ponder the question, “Who’s gonna drive you home tonight?” Listen to the heart-wrenchingly beautiful cover below:
