Michael Hutchence was born to be a frontman. With hair and shirtlessness that would make Jim Morrison proud, and a singing style that could be both passionate and cool in equal measures, Hutchence helped the songs of INXS stand out; they’re clearly from the ‘80s, but timeless in a way that most hits of the decade can’t claim.

Andre Mistier formed The Adversary after a trip to Burning Man, so for their first cover what better artist to choose than the Flaming Lips – basically the Burning Man of bands? Mistier, formerly of alt-rock quartet Ism, chose “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.” The narrative of the song overlaps with the dark post-apocalyptic dreamscape the group explore on their debut EP Chapter 1: The Ruins. Despite taking a four year hiatus from music, it has not taken Lily Allen long to get back in the spotlight. Her latest music video for her single “Hard Out Here” has stirred up some controversy and news outlets are talking about her new songs, inspired by everything from twitter feuds with rappers to feeling sexual after becoming a mom. The music blogosphere has erupted in Tears for Fears-related news, most notably with Lorde’s cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” for the latest installment in the Hunger Games trilogy. Unfortunately, one bit of news about the New Wavers seemed to be eclipsed by the excitement (and sometimes outrage) over Lorde’s rendition of their iconic song. These days, it seems that you can’t have a discussion of Miley Cyrus without getting into her public persona – the twerking, the outfits, the drug references, Liam Hemsworth, and so on and so forth. If there’s any discussion of artistry, it’s from the perspective of performance art, of people wondering whether her antics are just a part of the brand she’s trying to sell. But the fact of the matter is that she’s mastered a degree of artistry beyond that, and the attention surrounding her persona only serves to add a layer of depth to any sincere performance she might give.
