The A.V. Club’s Undercover series has spawned some interesting covers this year, most notably the Night Beds’ cover of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own.” When Chicago band Disappears stopped by The A.V. Club recently, they initially hoped to create a unique cover of their own by trying to make “New Year’s Day” by U2 sound “more like a Disappears song.” After realizing this wasn’t quite working, they decided to take another approach.
Their solution was to perform their cover with steady consideration of the original. To be clear, no one can replicate The Edge’s industrial guitar riffs or match the fervor in Bono’s vocals, but Disappears gives the cover added layers with their slightly distorted guitars, which sound at home on this cover.
