There are a few go-to songs that everyone (save the diehard fan) associates with OutKast – fewer still are the songs that make the oft-covered list. All of which makes it that much more of a pleasure to see Tame Impala covering “Prototype,” off of André 3000‘s half of 2003’s Speakerboxx/The Love Below.
The band treats the song with unmitigated reverence, the instrumentation coming together with the beautiful funk-romance of the original and vocalists Kevin Parker and Nick Allbrook channeling André in all his weird magnificence. It’s a faithful cover, but not with the feel of being a studied replication or a lack of originality; rather, it’s a fidelity born of time and love, and we’re all the better for it.
