It’s hard to know what to expect from the AV Club’s Undercover series. With twenty-five cover performances each season, we’re treated to an interesting melange of genres and approaches, from the sincere to the weird to the bitingly sardonic. It’s always a surprise and always a treat, and Frontier Ruckus’s take on Third Eye Blind‘s “Semi-Charmed Life” is no exception. The band kicks off the track with a deep slow bass drum, singing saw, horns, and melancholic vocals that seem to fit the song’s themes more than the original ever did, before launching into Third Eye Blind’s pop-rock feel (with the addition of banjos!).

The song is different and yet so familiar, and a wonderfully weird, earnest testament to a ’90s pop classic. Don’t miss it.
