Covering a Rihanna song seems to be a right of passage for current indie songstresses. Back in November, we heard Zola Jesus‘s take on the princess of pop’s “Diamonds,” and today we get to hear Jessie Ware’s minimal take on the song as well.

Ware does a great job of internalizing an undeniable pop ballad. Performed at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, the cover is small but still significant. Her stripped back acoustic rendition is harrowing and further solidifies her status as a pioneer in shoegaze and R&B-infused pop.

Jessie Ware is touring. See if she is coming to a venue near you on her official website.

Cover Me is now on Patreon! If you love cover songs, we hope you will consider supporting us there with a small monthly subscription.
