English Singer-Songwriter Natasha Khan, better known by her stage name Bat For Lashes has done her fair share of cover songs in the past. The other night she dropped by Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and reminded us all why we fell in love with her covers in the first place. Bat For Lashes covered the wildly popular Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ dance anthem “We Found Love.” A song that had almost slipped out of the cover song realm in the last few months. If you thought this song was haunting you before, wait till you hear Khan’s captivating cover.

The interesting thing about Rihanna’s hit is that the catchy dance music seemed to distract from the fact that the song is actually about some pretty deep, dark and resonating stuff. Khan puts the lyrics at the forefront of her cover and exposes listeners to the bitter-sweetness that is love. It may not be a club banger but it’s effective and intimate in ways the original wasn’t. She stripped down the beat so it leaves an almost eerie echo behind, and her voice is sweet and just desperate enough to make listeners believe it. Khan was at BBC promoting her new studio album, appropriately titled The Haunted Man.
