As we learned last August from their Hall and Oates album, the folks at Herohill can assemble quite a tribute. Culling from some of the same artists as they did on that album, they’ve now delivered an incredible and eclectic tribute to Leonard Cohen.

It’s difficult to ascribe any stylistic sensibilities to a Herohill compilation, because their parameters for artists are simply that they’re Canadian. Because of this, though, we’re presented with renditions of Cohen songs that range everywhere from country-folk to electropop; all of them, however, share the brilliant quality of being Leonard Cohen originals and the artists all bring their own styles to this fact.

Herohill had this to say on their website:

We asked our favorite bands to find a Cohen song that meant something to them and record it in the humblest, scrappiest way them could find. The results hiss and sigh, but they also soar. There are delightful stunning studio creations and humble, intimate bedroom recordings. There are punk rock guitars and glockenspiels. There are passionate moments, heartache and fire. There is everything that makes Leonard, well, Leonard.

This is certainly the truth. Furthermore, this tribute marks the debut of what we’ve been waiting for: a cover from the new Cohen album, Old Ideas, with Laila Biali’s take on “Show Me the Place,” and still it offers so much more than that in its twenty-four tracks.
