Recording a Bruce Springsteen cover is practically a musical rite of passage; no band seems able to resist the urge to make their mark on “Born to Run” or “Dancing in the Dark.” The latest Springsteen cover comes from Sydney-based band Charlie Horse. This week, the duo released their take on Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” as a free download.

“Atlantic City” is potentially the gloomiest, most barren track from Springsteen’s dreary solo effort Nebraska. Charlie Horse’s cover fleshes out the original substantially with prominent percussion and electric guitar. Combined with husky vocals from lead singer Crystal Rose, these elements transform Springsteen’s lament into flashy, 80s-tinged rock. The only downside to the cover might be that its dramatic change in tone diminishes the powerful desolation that Springsteen conveyed so perfectly in his acoustic original.
