Ryan Adams is a prolific musician. With his solo efforts, The Cardinals, and the now defunct Whiskey Town, Adams has proven himself to be indelible on the music world. Going beyond studio albums, tours, and collaborative endeavors, Adams also reveals his diverse talents through cover songs, many of which you can listen to here. The most recent song he covered was “Blue Thunder” by the masters of all things spacey and cerebral, Galaxie 500, which he debuted at the Orpheum Theater in Boston.

Adams surprised the audience with the cover, explaining that he wanted to “pay respects” to the music the Orpheum has housed. The audience eagerly approved of his announcement, but what follows is a surprisingly haunting version of “Blue Thunder” set to piano. Stripped of its dreaminess, the song is quite melancholic, but Adams manages to keep the melancholy from becoming something utterly dispirited, and instead turns it into a sentimental piece. Plus, for something he figured out during sound check that day, the cover is impressively striking. (via Consequence of Sound)
