Cover Me could probably have a new category added to the site just to handle all the Lady Gaga covers. For better or worse, the pop goddess’ songs have come to define mainstream music over the last couple years, and if you’re a young artist looking for a catchy (or ironic) cover, her stuff is a good place to start. Or maybe you’re a living legend of rock guitar and you’ve been making hits since the ’60s. Well, you too can cover Gaga.
Yes, Wednesday night, after receiving the Living Legend Award at the Classic Rock Awards in London, guitar master Jeff Beck took the stage to play “Bad Romance” (as well as covers of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and the Pretenders). Making the guitar sing as only he can, he walked the fine line between smirking irony and fond tribute. There’s no denying the staying power of the ubiquitous melody from Gaga’s first hit, and Beck makes it work in a classic rock setting. Beck has been playing the song in concert for a few weeks now, as seen in the video below, which a Seattle show October 28th.
