This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.

Today’s set takes on an unusual twist: no bands. These are all nominally solo artists (one duo), though most have friends playing with them on cello, bass, or, in one case, pots and pans. For the truly solo approach, check out the bonus covers that all feature just a singer and a guitar.

Percy Sledge is best known for “When a Man Loves a Woman,” but Los Angeles producer Joe Burge digs up a 1967 deep cut on his new single. It’s a modern soul spin on a super retro sound.

St. Vincent seems to be everywhere these days on the strength of her new album Strange Mercy. Jenny Founds’ new cover hearkens back to a time before she was so blog-beloved, on a song from debut Marry Me. This folk-pop gem reminds us that Annie Clark was great even before she was “Best New Music.”

Tycho Brahé’s terrific Géographies collection features covers of Neil Young, Cold War Kids, Cat Power, and more. No artist makes more sense for his everything-but-the-kitchen-sink (though maybe that too) approach than Tom Waits though. The accent makes “Rain Dogs” even more off-kilter than it already was.

If there was one regular complaint about Kanye West’s otherwise adored My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, it was that dumb Chris Rock monologue during “Blame Game.” If your ‘next’ key is worn out from skipping that one, perhaps you’d prefer to swap in this jazzy “Blame Game” cover. All the good parts, none of the Rock.

Edmonton songwriter Liam Trimble tacked on this Kinks to his Ultra Rare EP, blending acoustic guitar with cello and a Nick Drake-channeling croon. A Parisian coffeehouse take on an oft-covered classic.
