For an early Bob Dylan song, “With God on Our Side” doesn’t get covered as much as you might expect. The problem may be that it’s over seven minutes long, and artists committing to Dylan epic generally go for the better-known “Desolation Row” or “It’s a Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.” Never known for taking the obvious route though (see: “Beth/Rest”), Bon Iver dug up the anti-war chestnut at a recent Portland concert.

What could easily have been a solo acoustic number instead gets the full seven-piece band, trumpet solo and all. It becomes a meditative ballad that couldn’t be more different than that Björk cover they’ve been doing. Watch a video below.
