As far as women in music go, Emmylou Harris and Cher represent two far ends of the spectrum. One is a respected stateswoman of country music, and the other…is Cher. Lady Lamb the Beekeeper has covered both, though, and somehow makes them sound of a piece. We heard the excellent Emmylou Harris cover a few months back, but the new Cher cover proves much more surprising.

Lamb (aka. Aly Spaltro) performs Cher’s “Believe” with only guitar and some basic percussion. “Believe” was known for rocking Auto-Tune years before T-Pain came along, but, needless to say, that doesn’t feature in Spaltro’s version. It’s a barren, quietly heartbroken performance. Pair this with Yellow Ostrich’s recent cover of “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” and you have to wonder, is no song irredeemable?

  1. “Believe” really isn’t a bad song. I’ve heard great covers by Robbie Fulks and Dollar Store. Cher just can’t do her own song justice is all.

  2. WOW!! Whats a strange and yet compelling version. This site the best i’ve stumbled upon recently top marks!!!

  3. I once did a cover of Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical”. I thought it was irredeemable, but it turned out ok…

  4. Cher’s version is like the Beatles compared to this garbage.

  5. So tired of these strung out on heroin cover songs.
