Last week, A.V. Undercover took a break from covers. Well, took a break from real covers anyway. Bob Mould performing a song he wrote for his band Sugar clearly does not count as a cover, despite his protestations to the contrary. His performance of “If I Can’t Change Your Mind” was good, but we were a little bummed that the alt-rock classic wouldn’t see a genuine cover.

Well, not to worry. This week the Decemberists came in to really cover the song. They pay homage to the acoustic version that was the b-side to Sugar’s “Helpless” single. Colin Meloy talks about getting that single as a kid – and throws in a Huey Lewis dig – before the five band members all don acoustic guitars for an upbeat strum-along. It puts a smile on your face and makes us extra glad the song got a real cover after all.
