Amanda Palmer is no stranger to covers, nor is The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.” Palmer’s new duet cover of the song, however, has provided the Cover Me introduction to the delightful Kim Boekbinder (of the duo Vermillion Lies) and we’re all the better for it.

The ukulele cover hews closer to the Iron and Wine cover than the original, and yet it is hardly derivative. Inevitably, the duet’s soft ukulele sounds more like the Sam Beam acoustics that launched the Garden State soundtrack, but Boekbinder and Palmer subtly make the track their own. They change up the tune and tone and inflection of the vocals, just slightly enough to differentiate it and still so slightly as to make it difficult to discern. On a close listen, you can hear the differences, but on a casual listen, the track is no less beautiful in its elegant sparsity. There’s hardly a shortage of covers of this particular song, but this is one for the books. Enjoy.
