Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser are rock stars. This is not a statement we could have made a year ago, although they were certainly already rock stars of the international orchestral circuit. Now, though, with the recent release of their debut album and the live covers that have been circulating YouTube, they’ve solidified their rock and roll status.

While their produced music videos for “Smooth Criminal” and “Welcome to the Jungle” showed the duo’s intensity, watching them cover Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” demonstrates that their act is not an act at all. Hauser, on the left, clearly embraces the idea of being the most hardcore cellists in the world, all devilish grins and headbanging and singing along to his cello, while Sulic is an explosion of focused intensity and goofy smiles. They’ve admitted that their foray into covering popular music was a primarily commercial endeavor, but never has anything purely driven by CD sales looked like this much fun. Whatever they were when they started, they’re rockers now and it doesn’t seem like that attitude is going anywhere. Lucky for us.
