Regular readers know that every Tuesday brings another installment in the A.V. Club’s terrific Undercover series. Bands show up in their round room and cover a song from a list. A simple premise that produces terrific results.
Today, though, the preeminent pop culture website is doing something different. In lieu of their normal routine, they recorded seven covers in various Chicago locations of songs having to do with summer. They’ll be posting these “Summer Breeze” covers all day and, as a result, we’ll be updating this post all day. Check back here or follow us on Twitter to see when more get added.
The first two are up now. First, hairy Chicago quartet Maps & Atlases semi-ironically cover Seals and Croft’s 1972 soft-rock hit “Summer Breeze” in the Threadless warehouse with a dancing cookie behind them. Then, Cover Me favorite Yellow Ostrich cover Mungo Jerry’s classic “In the Summertime” on Navy Pier. Dig that squonking sax. Watch both below, then check back for the rest.
Update #1: Josh Caterer of the Smoking Popes covers the Smiths’ “Ask” on a roof deck.
Update #2: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. make Pavement’s “Summer Babe” friendlier.
Update #3: Owen covers Jane Addiction‘s “Summertime Blues” at a hot dog stand.
Update #4: Crooked Fingers goes for the obvious with George Gershwin‘s “Summertime.
Update #5: Les Savy Fav rock Alice Cooper‘s “School’s Out” on a boat.
