Though Diplo is the name most associated with Los Angeles label Mad Decent, another DJ/producer has also been with the label since the beginning. His name is Derek Allen and on his new DJA EP, he looks to marry the growing popularity of dubstep with more traditional club beats. The lead single, a cover of the Police’s “Spirits in the Material World,” does so nicely.

Allen’s “Spirits” finds the song a far cry away from the original reggae-rock. Thumping synths and skittery beats reinvent the song for the 21st century, equally ready for the club floor or for focused headphone listening. Download it below.
