In 1974, Stevie Wonder released Fulfillingness’ First Finale, the fourth in a five-album run that one fan described as “as brilliant a set of five albums as we’ve ever seen.” That fan? Barack Obama. Dude has a point.

Sandwiched between Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life, Fulfillingness has a tendency to fall by the back burner when discussing Wonder’s classic albums. “Boogie on Reggae Woman” stands as tall as just about anything Wonder recorded, but a song like “They Won’t Go When I Go” doesn’t get discussed much.

Not until Kanye West has a go at it that is. For his benefit performance at New York’s Museum of Modern Art Tuesday night, West opened his show with an Auto-Tuned a cappella cover of the Fulfillingness gem. It features a triumph-over-haters message that West can clearly relate to, segueing into his own “Hell of a Life.” Watch the video below, via Consequence of Sound.*

* Speaking of Pres. Obama, he delivered a choice quote about Kanye too: “He’s a jackass.”
