We’ve been seeing a flood of Fleetwood Mac covers lately. Last week, Glee did a Rumours tribute. Similarly-named musician Idiot Glee, on the other hand, went for a Tusk deep cut. We saw three versions of “The Chain,” from Bruce Peninsula, Young Buffalo, and Loch Lomond. Now San Diego roots-rockers Augustana continues the Rumours loving with the biggest hit of the 40-million selling album: “Dreams.”
Recorded for Billboard, their version strips the song down, as Fleetwood Mac covers tend to do. The simple arrangement may take an oft-trod path, but Dan Layus’ earthy croon brings surprising lung power to the folk-pop backing. The words chime like bells, even before the falsetto floors you.
