This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.

This week’s set has even less of a defining theme than usual. Old-school folk mixes with new-school hip-hop. Ukulele twee bumps up against chiptune bounce. The best link we can find: two of the covered artists come from Scandinavia (and Joni Mitchell‘s half Norwegian). Guess we’ll have to live with that.

It’s hard to think of two more different songs to pair on a covers EP than the Zoup chose. Track #1: Rebecca Black’s oftcovered “Friday.” Track #2: Dick Van Dyke’s lullaby from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. “Friday” sounds about like you’d expect, but “Hushabye Mountain” turns the schmaltzy ballad into an emo-pop banger.

All of Aeryn Martin’s just-uploaded Papercut’s Best Friend covers album is worth listening to, but her piano ballad cover of Robyn’s 2007 hit “With Every Heartbeat” is a particular gem. As we know, Robyn songs work in softer arrangements time and time again. Here’s another.

The Sea Sound’s “Pursuit of Happiness” likely takes a cue or two from Lissie. Still, the delicate ukulele cover pushes the song to its twee limit, making Lissie’s version sound positively metal by comparison.

There’s nothing particularly revolutionary about Grant Geertsma’s “A Case of You.” It’s simply acoustic done right: simple guitar strumming propelling his to-die-for vocals. For a different approach, check out James Blake’s recent cover.

At Cover Me, we never support carbon-copy covers. With Sigur Rós though, we might take it a step farther. Trying to incorporate any element from a Sigur Rós original is treading on dangerous territory. Very few artists can imitate this Icelandic quartet and it’s best not to try. Happily, in this chiptune-esque “Sæglópur” cover (English translation: “Lost at Sea”), Alex Dickey doesn’t. Not even a little.
