When Delta Spirit titled their EP The Waits Room last year, we hoped against hope that it was a Tom Waits covers disc. There was indeed a connection – they recorded it in the same closet-turned-studio Waits uses – but the songs were originals. Darn. Our faith was rewarded, though, because when they showed up to Daytrotter, they didn’t perform Waits Room cuts; they performed honest-to-goodness Tom Waits songs. Hooray!

Clearly well versed in Waits’ oeuvre, the Long Beach quintet jumps across the decades to perform four Waits gems. From 1974’s The Heart of Saturday Night comes “San Diego Serenade.” From 1999’s Mule Variations comes “Come On Up to the House.” From in between, they perform Waits fan favorites “Innocent When You Dream” and “Tango Till They’re Sore.” Download this last below, and the full set at Daytrotter.
